Cheap Holidays: Meals

Cheap Holidays: Meals

Having a cheap holiday is not just about the transportation or place you will be staying.  There are other parts to the whole travelling thing that will cost as well.  By planning your trip before you leave the UK you can have some of these costs taken care of.  For example, the best vacation is often one that is all inclusive for meals so that you know exactly what you are spending before you go.  In this way you are able to pay the money up front rather than overspending at restaurants.

Sometimes an all inclusive package is not available though, so you might end up needing to purchase your meals.  If you are in a situation where you need to purchase meals do a little research.  A lot of the restaurants in a city or town are going to be listed on the internet.  You can research the menus and decide how much you might have to spend per meal between everyone travelling with you.

You do not want to take a guide book or concierge’s word.  Most often these two things will lead you to the tourist restaurants.  These restaurants are going to be more expensive.  In fact hotel restaurants and many restaurants around the hotel will have increase prices because the tourists don’t bother looking for other places.  You don’t always have to avoid these places, but for the most part you should take another option.

When travelling you should ask a store clerk or even the hotel clerk where they eat, instead of asking for a restaurant they normally offer.  There are going to be little mom and pop restaurants off the beaten path.  These little treasures serve better food nine times out of ten and they offer better pricing.  By asking the locals where they eat you could save up to 40 pounds a day or more.

Most of the tourist restaurants will have meals from 10 pounds and up.  A small restaurant for locals will normally serve meals for much less, like 5 pounds, or of course the local currency.

Your other option for food is renting a place to stay with a kitchen.  A kitchen will allow you to make your own food and buy from the local farmers markets.  These street vendors offer top quality foods and you can have a meal for a lot less than a restaurant.  Sometimes it just isn’t about the travel portion of the trip, but where else you can save.
