Tips On Finding Cheap Holidays: Haggle

The statement "Tour operators make holidays, travel agents sell them" is very important to your ability to find a cheap holiday.  A cheap holiday is normally not going to fall in your lap.  Think of a vacation like you would with buying a car.  When you go to buy a new car, you have done your research on how much the car you want should cost new and used.  By knowing this you can visit dealers and find the car you like.  Once you are ready to make a deal you aren’t going to take the first price they offer you. Instead you are going to offer a price below what is on the tag then work towards what you want to pay for the car.  Haggling to get a price reduction is a great way to find something for less.

The same can be said for holidays.  If you haggle with the travel agent over the price the chances are you are going to get a better deal.  So how does this work?

First you need to find the perfect holiday.  The holiday you choose should be within your budget.  You can find the package or holiday on the internet to discover what you should be paying.  These holidays can be found on any travel site.  Once you get the information you need you can then go to a travel agent.

Explain the holiday you would like to have, then wait and see what the travel agent will come up with.  If the price the travel agent comes back with is lower than what you found on the internet, that’s great.  Chances are it will be more.  At this point you need to start haggling with the agent.  Explain that you are going to comparison shop.  You want to make sure their deal is the best.  You may even talk with a couple of different travel agents.

The agent isn’t going to want to lose the sale, as that is their income.  To prevent a loss they are going to work with you.  They may offer to see what they can do about price matching or getting the holiday even lower than the other price.  The best thing you can do is fudge the numbers a little bit.  If you found a vacation for 450 pounds tell the travel agent you found it for 425 pounds.  This is another incentive.  Most travel agents will work to get the vacation sold in a reasonable fashion.
