A Holiday In Lanzarote

A Holiday In Lanzarote

Lanzarote is the fourth largest of the Canary Islands; it is also the most easterly positioned. The island’s dimensions are 37 miles in length & 12 miles in width.

Parts of the island are reminiscent of being on another planet due to its volcanic appearance; during the 18th & 19th centuries the island witnessed many eruptions. The extremely arid environment coupled with the lack of erosion has simply left the landscape much as it was when the volcanic eruptions occurred.

The average annual rainfall is only 5.5 inches so it is hardly an umbrella & Wellington boots kind of destination!

It basks in a very mild, dry climate with the daytime temperatures averaging approximately 21 degrees celsius throughout January to approximately 29 degrees celsius in August.

A ‘must see’ attraction is the Timanfaya National Park; here you will discover the Montanas del Fuego, translated to ‘Fire Mountains.’ The Fire Mountains were produced between the years 1730 & 1736 during this period of time more than 100 volcanoes erupted & completely devastated this particular section of the island.

The final eruption took place in 1824, however because of the practically non-existent rainfall the terrain has remained much the same as when the eruptions happened. In the year 1968 the area became a national park.

There are many rare plant species to view & you can watch demonstrations to display how hot the area truly is. Visitors can enjoy a tour of the park &, if you are feeling brave, you can take a camel ride across the unique volcanic landscape. There is a restaurant serving food that has been cooked by literally placing a grill over a hole in the ground.

Another popular tourist attraction is the Cave of Los Verdes or the Green Caves, these are part of the Atlantida which are an underground cave system that were created approximately 3,000 years ago. It was thought that the Hispanic population sheltered within the system to hide from the pirates that frequented the island.

The tunnel system is over 6km in length & also has an additional 1.6km hidden under the sea, the cave itself measures more than 15 metres in width & 15 metres in height. They truly are a spectacular sight to witness with their beautiful array of colours.

If you prefer a walk on the wild side then pay a visit to the northern side of Lanzarote where you will discover the Guinate Tropical Park & Penguin Paradise, the park boasts 11 acres of land consisting of cascading waterfalls, serene gardens & calm ponds.

It is home to numerous species of reptiles, animals, birds & even fish. The penguins have their very own slice of paradise & visitors can view these playful birds doing what they do best, swimming or flying underwater.

The park also has a children’s play area & a restaurant serving hot & cold snacks, there is also a bar.

Ever fancied sunning yourself on a beach full of ‘black sand?’ Well you can do just that on the Playa Quemada beach or if you are a traditionalist & prefer the regular golden sand then visit the beautiful Puerto del Carmen beach. Why not try your hand at snorkelling or parasailing?

If you like to live it up then experience the nightlife in Puerto del Carmen where you will find live music & a vast selection of disco bars & clubs.

There are boutiques, clothes stores, perfumeries & many more shops on offer throughout the island, you will find a huge market in Teguise that will offer you an opportunity to sample some of the local life. There are Canarian dancers & paintings, jewellery & gorgeous woodcarvings. A word of advice though please do not accept the initial price you are offered as it will not be the lowest, learn to ‘haggle!’

Lanzarote has something for everyone, making it a truly delightful holiday destination.
