A Holiday In Gran Canaria

A Holiday In Gran Canaria

In the centre position of the Canary Islands you will discover Gran Canaria, it is also known as ‘the round island’ due to its circular shape. The island measures approximately 29 miles wide & covers roughly 1,532 sq.km.

Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands & it boasts a delightful combination of landscapes from soft, sandy beaches & glorious dunes to majestic mountains & little hidden coves. It is known for its ‘perfect climate,’ never too hot during the summer months & never too cold during the winter months.

Aquasur Water Park is the biggest water park on the island it takes up 130,000 sq.metres of land & boasts a grand total of 33 slides & 13 fabulous fun attractions including congo river, the rapids, aqua mania & twister. There is a children’s swimming pool & also an adult’s swimming pool & a restaurant.

Palmitos Park is certainly worth paying a visit with its tropical palm trees, birds, crocodiles & monkeys. Whilst you are there be sure to catch the parrot show, as it is very entertaining especially for the children.

Camel rides prove to be exceptionally popular throughout all of the Canary Islands but Gran Canaria has the edge on the other islands, this is due to the spectacular scenery. The ride takes visitors through the sand dunes of Maspalomas, for an instant you are almost transported to the Sahara Desert. One of the most memorable sights to behold is the magical sunset as it drops slowly down behind the sand dunes.

Are you a cowboy at heart, into the old westerns? Sioux City is a Wild West theme park; visitors can experience bank robberies, shootings, knife throwing & rain dances. The park also houses a small but very impressive zoo.

The Cenobio de Valeron / The Monastery of Caves are situated on the northern side of the island, the caves date right back to the Stone Age. In total there are 298 caves altogether & it is deemed to be a highly religious location, the strange point is that nobody has ever been able to come up with an explanation as to why the caves are there. They are certainly well worth seeing though & there is a very mystical, mysterious atmosphere throughout the caves.

If you can, make sure that you catch the Maspalomas carnival, according to locals it is the third largest throughout the world. It consists of a procession of highly colourful floats, dancing girls, drag queens & African tribal dancers. The bars stay open virtually the whole night & the carnival winds down around dawn or basically when you drop!

Playa del Ingles is one of the most popular & well known beaches throughout the whole of Europe, visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the beautiful promenade decorated with stunning displays of brilliantly coloured tropical blooms. Back on the beach you can try jet skiing or water skiing or simply take a refreshing swim & then relax on the soft sandy beach.

The terrain is also perfect for mountain biking or taking a more sedate bicycle ride; there are numerous places around Gran Canaria where you can hire bikes. If you prefer there are guided tours offered to ensure that visitors do not become lost!

Nightlife throughout Gran Canaria is, to put it bluntly, noisy. The whole party atmosphere does not begin until at least midnight & then continues until about 6am, there are so many venues offering a variety of music to pretty much suit everyone’s choice.

Visitors will soon discover that fish is definitely the favourite dish on the island, all caught locally & fantastically fresh. There are other dishes available of course if you are not a fan of fish.

Gran Canaria has so much to offer with its beaches, sand dunes, water parks & mysterious caves to explore.
